There are lenses, and then there are lenses. This lens surely falls into the second category. This Nikon fisheye is one for the books.
What exactly are we talking about here? We are talking about one of the most impressive wide angle lenses produced. The Fisheye-Nikkor 6mm extreme wide angle lens. First showed by Nikon in 1970 it was just as impressive then as now. Only a few hundred were ever produced, and even fewer are around today. One recently turned up in a London sale pulling nearly $160,000. At that price, you best be saving up your pennies!
It was originally intended for scientific, industrial, and special effects work. With a picture angle of nearly 220 degrees, you can see why it would be ideal. That, by the way, is enough for the lens to actually see behind itself.
Of course, now those left are cherished pieces of private collections. Just seeing one in action is quite the honor. That being, check out this video to see it in action.
