The Westboro Baptist Church was planning to picket the memorial of late United States Senator Scott White at the University of Washington, Seattle on October 6th 2011. Click Whirl Photography thought they would stop by.
The Westboro Baptist Church, a well known anti-gay extremist political group church group, founded in 1955 in Topeka, Kansas by Fred Phelps has become famous for it’s pickets of funerals and for its controversial messages. In a recent press release on the WBC site, they declared their intent to protest the memorial of recently deceased Washington State senator Scott White. Scott White was accused of pushing the “gay agenda” and failing to make a stand against such events as the “Seattle slut walk” and gay pride parades.
The protest was little known about, according to one Seattle PD officer, they were not informed of the upcoming protest. Even with this, many University of Washington students and community members assembled in counter protest.
The Westboro folks did not show up, and the day ended peacefully allowing the memorial of Scott White to proceed unmolested. Of course, that did not stop protesters from showing off their gear.
